LONDON MARATHON: NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR MASCOT WEARER!

Paul Simons awarded Guinness World Record after completing 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon

The 34th London Marathon took place on Sunday 13th April 2014 and saw a record turn-out of crowds lining the streets, with early indications that 750,000 people supported runners as they paced London’s streets.

London Marathon race director Hugh Brasher’s comments shortly after the race included recognition of the  huge fundraising efforts of participants:

“… The 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon looks set to break its own Guinness World Record of £53 million for charity fundraising at a single annual event worldwide, set in 2013”.

Over 35,000 runners completed the course – amazing achievements on an individual level.

For one runner, Paul Simons, he chose to run the 26.2 mile course wearing a Buxton Water mascot costume.  After the race, Paul’s time to complete the course - 3 hours 32 minutes – gained him a new Guinness World Record for Fastest Marathon Dressed as a Bottle.

Another participant running in costume was Andy Butler, who raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support wearing a giant wind turbine. Andy completed the London Marathon in a time of 5 hours 44 minutes, raising funds, gaining cheers along the way and helping to boost the profile of Renewable Energy.
