Alex the lion was born to perform; he’s a natural showman with a love for the limelight. He has a heart of gold and his athletic prowess will never compromise his kindness or impair his penchant for photogenic flair. Alex‘s first priority is the happiness of his crew. In friendship he is selfless, caring and fiercely loyal; this is his proudest role to fill.

The 4 mysterious and mission driven penguins, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, seem to have no limitations.

Skipper was born to lead. A reflexive contrarian, daredevil adventurer, instinctive do-gooder and avowed bad-guy-scheme foiler.

Kowalski possesses the intellect of three baby dolphins and serves as the brains of the outfit. Steady as a rock, he plays lieutenant to Skipper’s Skipper.

Rico is part Tasmanian Devil, part ticking time bomb and provides the team’s muscle. A demolitions expert and Skipper’s most reliable and unquestioning soldier.

Private is the youngest and is constantly trying to prove himself, although smarter and more valuable than his years suggest. The classic underdog, or as Skipper describes him, “sort of our secretary / mascot”.

• The Madagascar franchise follows the adventures of Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria, who have spent their lives in blissful captivity in Central Park Zoo – until they are catapulted into a life of unintentional, globe-trotting adventures
