Counting Down to Christmas with Magic Light Pictures

We are officially counting down the days for Christmas… and not just for the mince pies and festivities! We are especially excited for Magic Lights Pictures’ brand-new festive film, The Scarecrow's Wedding, which will premiere on BBC One at 3:10 on Christmas Day, immediately following The King's Speech.

Like so many families across the UK, we have fallen in love with Magic Light Pictures’ much-loved Christmas Day tradition, bringing Julia Donaldson’s wonderful stories (beautifully illustrated by Axel Scheffler) to life since 2009. Some of our favourites over the years include:

  • The Gruffalo (2009)
  • The Gruffalo's Child (2011)
  • Room on the Broom (2012)
  • Stick Man (2015)
  • The Highway Rat (2017)
  • Zog (2018)
  • Zog and the Flying Doctors (2020)
  • The Smeds and The Smoos (2022)

Harry & Betty with Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

This year, The Scarecrow's Wedding is a must-watch addition to our Christmas Day TV Schedule.

Recently, our Managing Director, Simon Foulkes, visited Twycross Zoo for Magic Light Pictures: The Gruffalo & Friends Winter Workshop, where partners came together to celebrate a fantastic year. The celebrations included a magical meet & greet with none other than the Gruffalo, an exclusive preview of The Scarecrows’ Wedding and a wander through the breath-taking Lanterns of the Wild Trail.

The trail features the world's first Gruffalo lanterns and will be running until February 2026. This is not one to miss; it is truly amazing!

Simon shared his thoughts from the day:

“What an incredibly informative and enjoyable presentation hosted by Magic Light Pictures at Twycross Zoo, where Licensees, Partners and Retailers sat in a room under the watchful eyes of prowling snow leopards. There were a few hastily brushed away tears when the lights came up following the exclusive screening of The Scarecrow's Wedding. And if that wasn’t enough, we then embarked on a one-mile walk around the most exhilarating, creative and beautiful Lantern of the Wild Trail. Great job, Magic Light Pictures and definitely ready for the Holidays now and a very exciting 2026.”

We are also thrilled to share that Harry O’Hay and Betty O’Barley from The Scarecrows' Wedding will be joining our licensed character list in the new year - and we can't wait to see what adventures they get up to next.
